YEMEN STRONGLY DENOUNCES TERRORIST ATTACK
On Monday, 2nd July, 2007 a group of Spanish tourists were attacked by a suicide bomber close to the site of the Temple of the Queen of Sheba in Marib. Seven Spanish tourists have lost their lives together with two Yemeni citizens, both were the drivers of the two cars in the tourist cavalcade.
The Republic of Yemen was subjected to a terrorist act of the kind that has been afflicting other states and nations. The terrorist gang behind this wanton attack wanted to undermine our country’s effective cooperation with the international community in the war against terror.
The perpetrators of this heinous crime also aimed to inflict damage on the national economy as well as disturbing the general calm that prevails in our country.
The Government and the people of the Republic of Yemen strongly denounce this terrorist act and reiterate that we spare no effort in pursuing the perpetrators and all others linked to this atrocity and bring them to justice so they can receive their due punishment for their horrific deed against Yemen ’s guests and its citizens. They also have to be punished for their crime against humanity and for the damage they have inflicted on the country’s stability, its interests and image abroad, which we are proud to say has been enhanced to our commitment to democracy and economic reform.
It has to be emphasised that what occurred at Marib has not resulted from a derelict of duty on the part of our security services that are renowned for their professionalism and dedication to duty.
We are all aware that unfortunate events can happen unexpectedly, particularly as we are dealing with terrorist organizations capable of carrying out atrocities in many countries of the world that possess resources which vastly exceed those available to us.
On this tragic occasion the people and Government of the Republic of Yemen wish to convey their deepest condolences to the families and friends of the demised and to the people and Government of Spain.
